Reducing Your Calories May Reduce Your Breast Milk Supply

Home ›› Breast Pumping FAQ's

It has probably been a long time since you fit into your favorite pair of jeans. Have you been trying them on everyday to see just how close you are to fitting into them? Well, unfortunately, this may not be the best time to go on that strict low-calorie diet.

Your body requires extra calories each day to keep up your breast milk supply. You may think, “Well, if I don’t eat those extra calories, then maybe I will lose that baby fat even quicker.” Though you may find each day you deprive yourself of those needed calories, your breast milk supply may begin to dwindle a little more each day.

If you have decided that you would like to begin losing weight, attempt some of the home remedies of increasing your milk, instead of strictly cutting down on the amount of calories you consume. Eating a bowl of oatmeal in the morning is a very healthy breakfast choice while keeping your metabolism up. Drinking water throughout the day will keep you feeling full, while keeping your body hydrated, in addition to maintaining a good supply of breast milk.

Watch your milk supply to determine if you are getting enough calories through the day. If your milk supply begins to decrease attempt to increase your calories for a couple of days. It is much easier to lose a few pounds a little later than trying to increase your milk supply again.
