Home ›› Breast Pumping FAQ's
As you are pumping late at night, perhaps half asleep watching “The Late Late Show,” you may suddenly notice that your breast milk is no longer collecting into your bottles. What has happened to all of that breast milk? Then you notice that the milk has been backed up and is collecting into your tubing, making quite a mess.
What is going on? Why isn’t your breast milk dripping properly into your bottles? Well, you may need to look at your valve and membrane that are attached to your breast shield. Because your breast milk contains so much fat, the fat can collect in the valve and clog up the holes that allow the milk to drip into your bottle, or the fat may cause the membranes to stick to the valves.
You will need to unscrew the breast shield from the bottle and pull the valve off of the bottom of the breast shield, and gently pull the diaphragm off of the valve. Clean both parts thoroughly with a gentle soap. You may need a toothbrush or baby bottle brush to get into the small crevices of the valve. Rinse and dry each part thoroughly before reattaching them.
If breast milk has gotten into your tubing you will need to clean these also. For more information, read “Why Is There Mold In My Tubing?”
