Breast Milk Protects from Some of the Effects of Poverty

Nonprofit Web site supplies pumps and breastfeeding education to mothers in need.

Prairieville, LA – December, 2006 – Despite the fact that virtually all health and nutrition authorities agree that breastfeeding and pumping are the preferred feeding methods; the majority of low income American babies are raised on infant formula.

According to research conducted by the Mother and Infant Research Unit at the University of York, in England, low income babies, who need the immunological, psychological and economical benefits the most, are more than 25 percent less likely to breastfeed than women with larger incomes.

“Human milk is the most healthful feeding option available, and is especially critical for premature and sick infants” said Wendy Williamson, a mother of two children and advocate for breast pumping. “By providing valuable breast milk information and distributing donated breast pumps, GotBreastPump.com hopes to provide low income families with healthy baby feeding methods and materials.”

Low income women tend to deliver babies prematurely, causing low birth weights and health complications. The United States Department of Agriculture also reports that these women tend to bottle feed their babies using infant formula, which increases health problems and healthcare costs. Educating low income women about the benefits of breast milk will not only increase breastfeeding and pumping rates amongst low income mothers, but will also improve the health of low income babies, while reducing health care expenditures.
